Living in Indio

A desert escape where style, sophistication, and serenity converge.

Indio’s journey began in 1876 with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which connected Yuma, Arizona to Los Angeles. The construction of the Southern Pacific Depot and Hotel transformed Indio into a vital stop for both railroad workers and travelers, offering rest, hospitality, and a place to refill steam engine water tanks. By the early 1900s, the railroad town evolved into a thriving agricultural hub, with crops like onions, cotton, grapes, citrus, and dates flourishing in the desert climate. As the community grew, schools and the La Casita hospital were established to serve the area’s residents. Although neighboring cities like Coachella and Thermal grew larger, Indio retained its nickname as the “Hub of the Valley.” With its vibrant lineup of annual events, Indio eventually became known as “The City of Festivals.” Today, it stands as the fastest-growing city in the Coachella Valley, celebrated for its strong schools, expansive parks, and lively cultural scene. Key attractions include the Coachella Music Festival, Stagecoach Festival, Empire Polo Club, Desert Horse Park, Coachella Valley History Museum, Indio Performing Arts Center, and The Arts Center.
