La Quinta's roots trace back to 1880, when the USDA introduced date palms to the area as part of an agricultural experiment. The local climate proved perfect for cultivation, leading to a booming date industry that now produces millions of pounds annually for export. In 1926, the iconic La Quinta Resort was established as a desert retreat for Hollywood stars and socialites, and with it came the valley’s first golf course. The development of State Route 111 further spurred growth, transforming La Quinta into a vibrant, sought-after destination. Today, La Quinta is home to PGA West, featuring six world-class courses—including those at the La Quinta Resort—and regularly hosts prestigious golf tournaments and invitationals. Popular attractions include Old Town La Quinta, the weekly Farmers Market, Art on Main Street, La Quinta Museum, Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area, Ironman 70.3, PGA West, the scenic Santa Rosa Mountains, and Civic Center Park.
