Living in Palm Desert

A desert escape where style, sophistication, and serenity converge.

Palm Desert has a rich and fascinating history. Originally known as Old MacDonald Ranch, the area was renamed Palm Village in 1920 after the planting of date palms, and officially became Palm Desert in 1951. During World War II, the city played a significant role when General Patton established a massive motor pool and maintenance camp here in 1943. The site was used to train over a million soldiers in desert ground combat and flying techniques. Many of these troops also assisted in mining operations throughout the area, extracting crucial metals like uranium for the war effort. The land once used for General Patton’s military camp has since transformed into El Paseo, a premier shopping destination filled with designer boutiques, upscale retailers, cafes, and fine dining. Often referred to as “Little Rodeo Drive,” it mirrors the luxury and charm of its Beverly Hills counterpart. Key attractions in Palm Desert include The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, El Paseo, the McCallum Theatre, and Civic Center Park.
