Living in Palm Springs
A desert escape where style, sophistication, and serenity converge.
For centuries, the Palm Springs area was home to the Cahuilla people, whose rich history is still evident in the region’s stunning canyons. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Spanish and Mexican explorers arrived, with Franciscan missionaries establishing missions throughout the area. By 1876, over 31,000 acres were divided in a checkerboard pattern—half allocated to settlers, and the other half to the Cahuilla. As railroads and ranches emerged, the desert’s climate gained a reputation for its healing properties. By the early 1900s, Palm Springs caught the attention of Hollywood. Because most film contracts required stars to stay within two hours of Los Angeles, many chose to build homes throughout the valley. Today, several of these iconic residences still stand—some preserved in near-original condition. Highlights of the area include the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, Palm Springs Air Museum, Indian Canyons, the Palm Springs Art Museum, Modernism Week, Village Fest, and the renowned Palm Springs International Film Festival.
