Rancho Mirage, officially incorporated in 1973, was the first area to emerge as a suburb of Palm Springs. Initially a fly-in getaway with a small airport, it soon caught the eye of developers. As the region grew, small ranches were replaced by upscale country clubs, shaping the city’s luxurious identity. The Thunderbird Country Club, completed in 1951, became the valley’s first 18-hole golf course and went on to host the Ryder Cup just a few years later. Tamarisk Country Club followed in 1952, founded by a group of prominent Hollywood figures who created it as a welcoming space for Jewish families. Among the original “Golden 65” founders were Jack Benny, Danny Kaye, and the Marx Brothers. Golf legend Ben Hogan served as the club’s first professional, and the community later became home to Frank Sinatra’s largest and final desert estate.
